Are you an experienced Systems Engineer who is a generalist with an eye for details? Do you want to work in a dynamic, international scientific environment and do you have experience in the design of highly complex systems? For the next generation of world class radio telescopes, we are looking for a

Systems Engineer (f/m)

Job description:

As a Systems Engineer, you will contribute to the systems engineering activities of scientifically and technologically innovative astronomical instruments. These instruments consist of various sub-systems, ranging from antennas, dedicated electronics and mechanical structures to advanced digital signal processing and complex software systems. At ASTRON, you will work closely with people from various disciplines.

Your primary duties and responsibilities consist of defining and implementing the systems engineering activities at ASTRON. This includes, but is not limited to, drafting requirements, decomposing stakeholder requirements to system level functions, defining functional architectures and flowing down performance to all functional levels. The deliverables of the development process, including testing and handover to production are a key element of your function. Collaborating with other departments is therefore essential. Also maintaining technical budgets and allocations, configuration and change control management together with participation in (international) system level reviews is part of your job. As an experienced systems engineer, you will also contribute to consolidate and sustain the systems engineering process within ASTRON’s R&D department and find a balance between the formal process and the needs of projects.

Job requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in (electrical) engineering, (applied) physics or scientific instrumentation
  • Preferably experience with astronomical instrumentation
  • Knowledge about and experience with systems engineering processes, principles and practice
  • Proficient oral and written communications skills
  • Experience in tailoring/agile systems engineering
  • Flexible to adapt processes to the project need
  • Team player
  • Open and convincing attitude

Our offer:

  • We offer a contract for two years.
  • Besides a pleasant and challenging work environment we have a good package of benefits like a pension plan, group discounts on individual insurances, travel expenses and a year-end bonus.
  • We offer flexible conditions of employment, tailored to your personal situation. For example the exchange of holidays for salary.
  • We offer generous relocation expenses and support with finding accommodation.

The organisation:

The mission of ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, is to make discoveries in radio astronomy happen via the development of novel and innovative technologies, the operation of world-class radio astronomy facilities and the pursuit of fundamental astronomical research.

We are a world-wide leader on the development of array antennas for radio astronomy. We have developed and built phased arrays of 100,000+ elements operating between 10 and 1450 MHz, and L-band phased array feeds for the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. Our research and development aims at continuously improving the performance and cost-effectiveness of this technology for future telescopes, such as the Square Kilometre Array.

ASTRON is hosted just outside Dwingeloo in Drenthe. At the moment there are about 165 researchers, technicians, and operational employee’s working at ASTRON. You will be working in the SD&I (System Design & Integration) Group. This group consists of six people.

Medewerker aan het woord
Tammo Jan Dijkema
Scientific software engineer
