NWO believes in providing opportunities for very talented staff to excel. As such, NWO is committed to improving the gender balance among its research and engineering staff. The NWO Women In Science Excel (WISE) programme provides talented female scientists and engineers with an opportunity to develop their research or technical expertise at their institutes.

The NWO WISE program is designed to attract talented female researchers and engineers, and to promote their advancement. This/these tenure track positions target young female researchers who have obtained their PhD three (or more) years ago, or engineers who have just started out in their field of expertise and are interested in pursuing a PhD. Successful candidates will be offered a tenure-track position (five years) at ASTRON. Following a successful tenure track, fellows will be confirmed into a tenured position. There are also opportunities for more senior female researchers/ engineers, who qualify for an accelerated tenured position.

Job description:

As an experienced data scientist or engineer working in high performance, high throughput computing you will be familiar with radio astronomy data processing techniques and the information and communication technology to support the challenges of modern radio telescopes, such as LOFAR and the Square Kilometre Array. While a PhD in a relevant area (astronomy, high performance computing) is desirable, it is not essential.

Job requirements:

  • Experience in high performance computing and familiar with the technology relevant for data intensive, distributed computing.
  • The ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, distributed team developing solutions for data intensive applications.
  • Able to lead a team of developers, software engineers and domain experts.
  • Able to contribute to the Science Data Centre strategy, including future funding proposals.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

ASTRON is the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy. Its mission is to make discoveries in radio astronomy happen, via the development of new and innovative technologies, the operation of world-class radio astronomy facilities, and the pursuit of fundamental astronomical research. Engineers and astronomers at ASTRON have an outstanding international reputation for novel technology development, and fundamental research in galactic and extra-galactic astronomy as well as more technical oriented research.

Additionally, for experienced (PhD) researchers, please also submit:

  1. a 3-5 page research plan, including a statement of research accomplishments and future research goals, possible collaborations within the institute or outside the institute, and how this research dovetails with the institute’s strategy;
  2. a list of 3-5 selected ‘best papers’ (preferably including copies); and
  3. the names and contact information (including e-mail addresses) of 3 referees.

Offer:

We offer a stimulating research environment with excellent opportunities for career advancement along with a personal development plan. At the start of your contract, you will develop a strategy to ensure the successful completion of your tenure track. This strategy will also detail arrangements to guarantee a strong starting position for you (such as a PhD position or a consumables budget) and provide you with personal development guidance (such as courses and the assignment of a mentor). Employees from abroad will receive support settling in the Netherlands, for example with housing or finding partners a suitable job.

The tenure track position is for a maximum of five years depending on experience and accomplishments. The terms of employment comply with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Institutes (‘CAO-onderzoekinstellingen’). Depending on your background and experience, the gross monthly salary of a tenure track position on a full-time basis will range between € 3.682.00 and € 5.757.00 gross per month. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. It is possible to work part-time with a minimum of 0.8 FTE. If the employment is less than 1 FTE, the term of the employment will be extended proportionally, with a maximum of six years.

Your performance will be evaluated regularly during your tenure track term, based on performance criteria agreed upon and outlined in your tenure track plan. You will be offered a tenured position at the end of a successfully completed tenure track term.
